Kyiv's Freezing Winter: Can Peace Talks Bring Hope?
Summary
What Is Happening in Kyiv Right Now?
Kyiv is the capital of Ukraine. It is a big city with 3 million people. But in January 2026, Kyiv is suffering. Russia is attacking the city's energy system. Kyiv has no heat. Kyiv has no electricity. It is freezing.
The temperature is minus 15 degrees Celsius. That is very, very cold. In apartment buildings, it is as cold inside as it is outside. Families sit together to stay warm. Old people get sick. Children cry because they are cold.
Over 600 buildings have no heat. That is a lot of people freezing. About 600,000 people left the city to find places with heat and electricity. That is one-sixth of the city.
Why Is Russia Doing This?
Russia is destroying Kyiv's electricity system on purpose. This is a weapon. It is called "weaponizing winter." Russia wants to freeze the people. Russia wants them to suffer so much that they push their government to give up and accept Russia's demands.
Russia fired 242 drones and 36 missiles at energy facilities on January 9 alone. On January 20 and January 24, Russia attacked again. Now Kyiv has only 10% of the electricity it needs.
Utility workers try to fix the system. But Russia attacks again and breaks what they just fixed. At least 2 workers died trying to repair the system while it was under attack.
Can Peace Talks Help?
President Trump said Putin agreed to stop attacking Kyiv for 1 week. Trump said this would give people a chance to get warm and for peace talks to happen. But is this really true?
Russia has broken promises before. In March 2025, Russia said it would not attack energy infrastructure for 30 days. Russia broke that promise after a few days. Also, while peace talks were happening in Abu Dhabi, Russia attacked another city and killed 5 people.
President Zelensky does not trust the promise. He said it is just a "gentlemen's agreement," not a real ceasefire. He said Ukraine did not talk directly with Russia about it. America suggested it, and maybe Russia will follow it or maybe not.
What Happens If Peace Comes?
This is the big question. Russia wants all of the eastern part of Ukraine called Donetsk. Russia also wants Ukraine to promise never to join NATO (the military alliance with America). Ukraine says no to both of these things.
So what happens? Maybe Ukraine has to accept these demands because people are freezing and suffering. This would be very bad for Ukraine. But it might be the only way to stop the suffering.
Or maybe Russia will keep breaking promises and peace will never come. Then people will freeze all winter.
Or maybe a real peace will come where both sides give up something. But right now, that does not look like it will happen.
Why This Matters
What happens in Kyiv affects the whole world. If Russia can win by freezing a city and making people suffer, then other leaders might try this too. Other wars might use this weapon.
Also, if Ukraine loses land and independence, then Russia can attack other countries too. This would be very bad for world peace.
Right now, the people of Kyiv are hoping for 2 things: heat and peace. These 2 things might not come together. That is the tragedy.
The next talks are February 1. Maybe something will happen then. Maybe peace will come. Maybe the heat will come back. Maybe both will happen. But maybe nothing will change and people will keep freezing.
